U.S. Department of State Washington, D.C.

FACTSHEET

ANTHRAXVACCINE

While the Department of State has no information to indicate there is a likelihood of a chemical or biological agent release in the immediate future, the Department recognizes that the anthrax agent(s) may become a potential health risk at our diplomatic and consular establishments abroad. Therefore, the Department of State has decided to institute a voluntary, worldwide anthrax immunization program for eligible United States Government employees and their families serving abroad. It is anticipated that this immunization program will be phased in over several years.

The anthrax vaccine is not readily available for purchase or use by private parties. It is produced exclusively by the Michigan Biological Products Institute under contract to the Department of Defense. Virtually all vaccine produced is under Defense Department contract primarily for military, use and a small number of other official government uses.

For additional information, consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or your health care provider.
